Its unanswered questions remain important precisely because answers cannot simply be invented to fill the gaps. Perhaps future research will sharpen the date, explain the unusual proportions of the head, or reveal more about the sequence in which the sculptors worked. For now, the Sphinx stands somewhere more interesting than certainty or fantasy. Its stones preserve evidence, its missing pieces preserve questions, and its battered face continues to look east across a landscape that has been changing around it for thousands of years.
